Scrap the airport station surcharge!

One of the main justifications for WestConnex is to improve connections to the airport. But despite costing $17 billion and growing rapidly, the tollway goes nowhere near it. Meanwhile, passengers and airport workers are slugged with the $13.80 'station access fee', if they choose to leave their cars at home and catch the train.

This ridiculous penalty must be stopped. When a similar fee was removed from Mascot and Green Square stations, patronage jumped by 70%, taking countless cars off the road, freeing up this precious resource for those who actually need to drive.

This fee is also an embarrassment to Australia as foreign tourists first and last memory of our country is being ripped off for catching public transport.

When the station access fee is removed, one of the key justifications for WestConnex falls away. This simple change can also be made without destroying any homes, trees, or precious parks.

We therefore call upon the Premier Gladys Berejiklian and the Minister for Transport Andrew Constance to immediately scrap the station access fee at Domestic and International stations.

Sydney airport is a disgrace. Parking is expensive & difficult. Train should be free!

Tourists’ first impression of Sydney should be pleasant surprise at how easy, convenient and affordable public transport is. Not shock at how much they are charged for a short journey to the city.

Just another example of the rapacious monopoly that is Sydney airport. Let’s not forget the onerous restriction on public bus transport that is part of this cosy arrangement.

Affordable public transport that works is the way to build and improve a city. Not motorways and huge station surcharges. I have never been anywhere else in the world that makes it so hard for people to use public transport in what is supposed to be a world city.

paul jeffery, In attempting to open the governments collective mind to options other than cars and bring Sydney and NSW into the new millennia we are always looking to improve our environment with intelligent initiatives and suggestions. Removing the penalty for using public transport to the airport will dramatically improve traffic congestion, air pollution and peoples reliance on cars. This will in turn free up the roads for essential commercial traffic. It will also be a boost to the tourism industry, especially for back-packers, whom are farmers are desperately trying to encourage to visit and work.
